Spatial Perception

CLASS PROJECT

This a classroom project which was made at the National Institute of Design as a part of an interesting module about spatial perception. Which had to involve a keen understanding of the space and creating a classic design for it. In this process of understanding and implementing the perception for space there was a thoughtful workflow involved in it.

This process for me has been a creative amalgamation of human emotions and behaviors which dwelled into the site of space. The project included all the team members to write a story of their own and the stories were being exchanged and read by each other. I ended up reading the story of my teammate and I picked a particular “tagline” which was important in the story. Post which an “emotion” was figured out from the tagline which was then used to create designs.

I then explored various forms and manipulated them as well to depict that emotion. A finalized form was then explored further to make a composition. Based on the composition a fine 3D form was being curated. To gain the refined 3D form various materials were being explored and used in a way that could bring the emotion factor to the form. Considering the final 3D form as a building I decided to design a part of it which turned out to be a staircase. The staircase was designed on the same lines depicting the same emotion of the building(3D form). Again the process repeated where the form exploration for the staircase was being made. Making use of this form the final prototype of the Staircase emoting a particular feel was created.

1 STORY

Bhumi was staying in Mumbai before she got a better job offer. The acceptance of a new job offer made her fly back to her home-Delhi. After three months, her manager approved leave of four days. “Hurray holidays!” It was a winter evening. After office hours, she carried her luggage to the airport cab. What a feeling! Her mind blossomed into memories of Mumbai. She checked in at the airport. She waited for boarding to start. Every moment of the wait was raising her eagerness to see her friends. And finally, plane take of so did her excitement. In Mumbai, her friends had planned a grand welcome at the airport. It was a very busy day for them. They had a presentation at the office. After getting really good feedback; They were already happy. The thought that Bhumi would be in town boosted their happiness. On the way to the airport, They bought a garland of orchid flowers. Gulab-Jal and sprinkler. They waited for her at the arrival gate. And they waited. Every moment of the wait was raising their excitement. ‘Whoo! Amchi Mumbai!” they cheered as they saw Bhumi Pushing her luggage trolley out from the arrival gate. After warm hugs, they put the garland over her head. Bhumi Loved orchids. The fragrance filled the air. The gange stood Out in the space grabbing the attention of the people around. Bhumi’s brown eyes glistened and reflected the bright light of the airport. Her friends also sprinkled Gulab-Jal which actually did not smell as expected. The shopkeeper might fold them. But it is not at all affected the excitement. As planned, their first stop was their favorite restaurant next to Versova beach. The restaurant looked the same as their last visit. It was just enough to ignite every detail from their memories. They had terribly missed their hi 5s, laughter, group selfies, funny dance steps, truth, and dare. Sitting at the same table as before, they relive those moments. time flew, Lights turned dim. Water swiped the card. The gang then moved to the beach to their favorite spot on the rock. Sound of the sea merged with the guitar strumming. That evening was special. By sharing old memories, they created a new one.
